United States President Donald Trump has commended President Bola Tinubu for his decisive leadership in tackling terrorism and protecting Christian communities in Nigeria.
Trump conveyed the commendation in a letter dated July 6, 2026, made public on Wednesday by Presidential Adviser Bayo Onanuga.
In the letter titled ‘President Trump lauds President Tinubu’s decisive leadership against terrorists’, Trump praised Tinubu’s resolve and reaffirmed US commitment to support Nigeria’s anti-terror fight.
“Your kind words mean a great deal to me, and I appreciate your decisive leadership on behalf of the Nigerian people. I applaud your resolve to tackle the issues plaguing your nation, especially the violence affecting Christian communities,” Trump wrote.
He said the US-Nigeria relationship is crucial amid spreading conflict in West Africa, citing the historic 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap and deployment of US Special Operations Forces to equip Nigerian Armed Forces with skills, tools and intelligence.
The Presidency said both countries have strengthened cooperation via a Joint Working Group co-chaired by their National Security Advisers, focusing on training, intelligence sharing and joint operations, including a May 16 operation against ISIS in Lake Chad that killed top leader Abubakar Al-Minoki.
It added that US Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, Frank Garcia, visited Abuja last week to pledge deeper security cooperation.
