**Critical Thinking With Rev Samuel Arowosafe**NIGERIA:WHY ARE WE LIKE THIS?

WHY ARE NIGERIANS THIS WAY?

1. Survival Became Our Primary Strategy:
For generations, an unyielding system taught us a single, ruthless lesson: “If you do not run, you will be trampled.”
When the power grid failed, we generated our own power.
When public utilities dried up, we sank our own wells.
When opportunity vanished, we created our own survival tactics.
When a society consistently rewards shortcuts over substance, expediency becomes a culture. This is not an apology for our flaws; it is a diagnosis of a pattern we must urgently break.

2. We Confused Volume with Value:
We have grown accustomed to celebrating the loudest voice rather than the soundest mind. We showcase the emblem before we construct the character required to sustain it. We crave the prestige of the throne, yet despise the labour of the workshop.
Consequently, quiet integrity has come to look like foolishness—until the structures we build without foundations inevitably collapse around us.

3. Trauma Was Passed Down through the Generations.
Our collective impatience, deep-seated distrust, and the impulse to grab whatever is within reach were not born in a vacuum; they are the scars of decades of broken promises—by leaders, by institutions, and even by those within our immediate circles.
Unaddressed pain shapes human behaviour. But while a wound explains a flaw, it never justifies maintaining it.

4. We Disregarded the Power of Micro-Choices
We pray for national greatness while compromising on the smallest details: a minor traffic infraction, a padded expense, a white lie to shortcut a process.
Yet, nations are not birthed by grand declarations; they are constructed like foundations—one honest, faithful layer at a time.

Yet, there is another unshakeable truth:
The Nigerian spirit remains one of the most resilient, inventive, and profoundly generous forces on earth.

We built global technology hubs in the face of infrastructure deficits. We forged thriving enterprises out of sheer willpower. Around the world, Nigerians consistently rise to the top—proving that the very intensity that can dismantle a society, when channeled rightly, can build an empire.

So, why are we “this way”?

Partly because of the environment that shaped us.
Partly because of the choices we have tolerated.
But mostly because we have not yet resolved collectively to cultivate character when no one is watching.

A Call to Personal Accountability:

Real transformation begins in the mirror. If we desire a new Nigeria, we must commit to four fundamental shifts:
1. Refuse to rationalize wrongdoing simply because it has become commonplace.
2. Honour the small convictions—in our dealings, our wait times, our receipts, and our words. Small acts of fidelity compound into national character.
3. Elevate quiet integrity above flashy, unearned success.
4. Build with depth where there are no cameras. The true future of Nigeria will be forged in the shadows of private discipline.

Nigeria is not a lost cause. Nigeria is a foundation project. And enduring foundations are never laid by governments alone; they are laid by ordinary citizens choosing integrity in the dark.

_“A life built solely for display will eventually crumble. A nation anchored in character will endure.”_

If these words hit home, do not let them end as a fleeting thought. Select one small area of your life today, and choose the higher path. That is how a national narrative is rewritten.

With unwavering love for our country,
